Oscars 2023: India’s The Elephant Whisperers makes history with Best Documentary Short win

The Elephant Whisperers has won the award for Best Documentary Short at the 95th Academy Awards. The film is directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and produced by Guneet Monga and Achint Jain.

Guneet Monga took to her social media handle to share her reactions to the win. Dropping a photo of the winning moment, she wrote, “Tonight is historic as this is the first-ever Oscar for an Indian production. India’s Glory with 2 women.”

On stage, director Kartiki Gonsalves dedicated the award to India in her winning speech.

The Elephant Whisperers was up against Haulout, How Do You Measure a Year?, The Martha Mitchell Effect and Stranger At The Gate.

The documentary follows a family from Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Reserve and the baby elephants they adopt. The heartwarming short made waves since its release.
