Priyanka Chopra has been facing major flak online after it was announced that she would be a judge on a series where six activists would be pitted against each other to find the next great activist. “On Thursday, CBS announced ‘The Activist,’ a five-week series that will pit six international activists against each other to bring change to urgent global crises like health, education, and climate change. Hosts Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Julianne Hough will guide them through a series of challenges, which will have their success measured by social media metrics and their own feedback,” said popular Instagram page, Diet Prada.
Now, Jullianne Hough has responded to the criticism around the show. “After the press release announcing The Activist, I heard you say that the show was performative, promoted pseudo-activism over real activism, felt tone-deaf, like Black Mirror, The Hunger Games, and that the hosts weren’t qualified to assess activism because we are celebrities and not activists,” she wrote on Instagram. “I heard you say that there was hypocrisy in the show because at the root of activism is a fight against capitalism and the trauma that it causes so many people and that the show itself felt like a shiny capitalistic endeavor,” she added.
She went on to add that the ‘pitting against each other part’ of the show makes it feel like an Oppression Olympics. “And because of all this, there is a feeling of insult, dehumanization, insensitivity and hurt that is being rightfully felt. I do not claim to be an activist and wholeheartedly agree that the judging aspect of the show missed the mark and furthermore, that I am not qualified to act as a judge,” she said.
